About TrainSpeed

TrainSpeed is a free, real-time speedometer for train passengers. Open it in your phone’s browser during a journey and it shows how fast your train is moving, your current height above sea level, and the local temperature — with no app to install.

It works entirely through your browser’s built-in GPS. Your speed is read from the satellite positioning on your device, altitude comes from the same GPS fix, and the temperature is fetched from the Open-Meteo weather service using your approximate location. For the best readings, sit near a window where your phone has a clear view of the sky, and remember the speed only becomes meaningful once the train is actually moving.

Frequently asked questions
Why does it need my location?

Your speed and altitude are calculated from your phone’s GPS, so the site needs location permission to work. Nothing is stored on our servers.

Do I need to install an app?

No. TrainSpeed runs in any modern mobile browser. Just open the page and allow location access.

Why does my speed show 0 or a dash?

GPS needs a clear signal and actual movement. While stationary, or before the first satellite fix, the speed reads 0 or “--”. It updates within a few seconds once you’re moving.

How accurate is the altitude?

GPS altitude is approximate and can vary by several metres depending on signal quality, terrain, and your device.

Does it use much data?

Very little — only small weather lookups and any ads on the page. The speed and altitude calculations themselves use no data.
